When we went to sell Babylon 5, I wrote a pilot screenplay to take around. When we made the deal, the notes process began...and the script went through considerable changes. But this is the ORIGINAL draft, the one only seen by the studio and the other producers on the show.

What's different? How about Garibaldi trying to get hold of his dying father back on Mars...how about a shape-shifter instead of a Minbari assassin with a changeling net...Londo as a part-time pick-pocket...Dr. Chakri Mendak instead of Dr. Kyle...new scenes between Lyta and Laurel, Delenn and others that were later cut...a LOT more character scenes with Sinclair and Garibaldi...a discovery about Delenn's lifestone and what that means to the Minbari...where Sinclair is NOT put on trial, but finds a whole different and more interesting way to solve the mystery of Kosh's assailant...and the introduction of Kosh's life-mate, Velana, who plays a very important role in the script. (Didn't know Vorlons had life-mates, did you?)

Kahtlemata väga huvitav asi, kuid hinnad on tõesti päris karmid.

Palju huvitavat Babylon 5 tegemise kohta ja ka selle kirjutamise kohta, võib leida ka Babylon 5 DVD'de boonusmaterjalist, millest mul pooled olemas on. Muidugi on selge, et nendes raamatutes on veel oluliselt rohkem huvitavat informatsiooni.

Eriti huvitav oleks lugeda neid alternatiivseid scripte, sest tihtipeale on nii, et see, mis ei läinud toomisse, on veel parem kui originaal.

Volume 3 (season2 algus) läbi loetud. Raamatu maht on ~60 lehekülge kommentaare, ~200 lehekülge scripte ja ~30 lehekülge memosid. Olen kindel, et JMS nautis selle kirjutamist, lugedes võib naerukrambid saada.

Mõned mõtted tekstist:

1. Algupärane Sheridani memo (1 May 1994) on päris huvitav. John Strider. Ning tsiteerides "Archetype: Pierce Brosman, or young Sean Connory". Ning eks valmisprodukt oligi kõike seda, mis algsesse memosse kirja pandi.

2. Põhjus, miks Michael York valimine Sheridani rolli lükati PTEN'i poolt tagasi on idiootsuse tipp. Sellist põhjendust ikka annab välja mõelda. Kuid lõpp hea, kõik hea - Bruce Boxleitner oli siiski väga õnnestunud valik.

3. Lisaks Strideri memole on veel 2 tegelase kirjeldused - ISN reporter (loobuti rahapuudusel) ja Starfury'de piloot (stuudio nõudmisel kirjutati ümber Kefferiks). Arvan, et nende mittekasutamine oli õige otsus, mõlemad tegelased midagi juurde ei andnud.

4. Fakt, et "The Coming of Shadows" pole esimene osa, kus me Rangereid näeme.

5. Sheridani une ("All Alone in the Dark") põhjalik kirjeldus. Mind üllatas, keda JMS pidas silmas lausega "the man in-between is looking for you". Mina pean selleks Justinit (kuigi JMS mõtles kellegi teise peale).

6. Memode hulgas on põhiliselt osade premised (kaasa arvatud need mis kõrvale jäeti). Nagu JMS ka kommenteerib, enamus kõrvale jäetud sisupunktidest on tagasivaates päris halvad. Erandiks on "A Dream Within a Dream" (klassikaline rollivahetusosa - kapten Jack Carr, tema "2nd in command" kommander Dylan, turvaülem Len, minbari Sherdinn, narni S'san ja centauri Garbaldo - ainult Kosh on Kosh ). JMS oleks tahtnud seda osa teha, kuid stuudio bossid arvasid et see oleks viinud vaatajad liiga suurde segadusse. Kahju. Esimesene tuleb sellistest rollivahetustest meelde Farscape vastav osa. Lisaks on osa sisukokkuvõte päris huvitav.

Arvan, et raamat oli oma hinda väärt. Järgmisena ootan Volume 8 ilmumist.

Reedel saabus raamat kohale. Päris kiiresti peaks ütlema, täpselt nädalaga tuli kohale.

Ootasin rohkemat. Minusugusele B5 fännile oli enamus fakte juba teada. Alternatiivne S5 memo ja alternatiivse spinoffi treatment olid huvitavad, kuid midagi enneolematut neis polnud (samu elemente kasutati niigi nii S5 kui Crusade puhul).

Enne lugemist mõtlesin, et peaks äkki ka järgmise (kus juttu nii SiL'st kui ka S4-S5 vahelisest perioodist) ostma, kuid olles pettunud Vol10 sisus otsustasid sellest loobuda. Minu potentsiaalne DVD wishlist on niigi juba pikk, täna tellisin r1 9 Souls'i, lisaks on tulemas muudki kraami.
