Enterprise kirjutas:

Miks me SGU-d kritiseerime?

Baltar ajas mul eluisu ära, kui ma hommikul kell 5 vaatasin BSG'd, Rush on aga mõnusalt ülbe - sama jällegi, kõik panevad neid kahte tegelast ühte patta, et Rush=Baltar ja räägitaksegi SGU teemade all Rushist, kasutades Baltari nime - what is this, I don't even...

Me oleksim tõenäoliselt nende suhtes lihtsalt andestavamad.

Very Happy

Smile

Rodney McKay osatäitja David Hewlett avaldas arvamust SGU kohta:

Valitud lõik:
Tsiteerin::
I think the biggest detriment they had was that people came from watching 'Atlantis' expecting more of the same from 'SGU,' and it was a really different change of direction. And it's beautifully done ... I think the problem they came up against was that they had a very strong existing fan base for something that was, I think, lighter. You know, I used to call us the "Disney of science fiction." I didn't mean that as a put-down -- what I meant was that we were the kind of science fiction that families sat down and watched together. We had kids and parents and grandparents and the neighbors come by all to watch our show. That's an amazing thing in this day and age. But 'SGU' is definitely an adult show for an adult audience, and it was a much darker show. So obviously the people who want to sit down wither their family, you know, they can't do that with 'SGU.' But that unto itself opens up a whole other audience. It's just unfortunate that they hadn't had a chance to really spread their wings and become their own show. But I think that's the danger when you play with the tone of a franchise like this.

Tervet intervjuud loe siit.

GateWorld avaldas artikli, kus kirjutatakse, kuidas SGU 2. hooaeg alguses lõpetada kavatseti ning samuti esitatakse produtsentide mõtteid, kuidas tekkinud olukorda oleks lahendada võinud:

Tsiteerin::
Executive producer and “Gauntlet” co-writer Joseph Mallozzi revealed on his blog that in the story’s original pitch, the identity of the person who stayed outside of the pods came down to a coin-flip … and was to be left ambiguous at the season’s end, setting up a fascinating character study for the start of Season Three.

“The original pitch had Young and Rush as the last two men standing,” Mallozzi said. “With one, lone serviceable pod remaining, they argue, then make the decision to let fate decide. They flip a coin. Winner makes the sacrifice and stays out; loser goes into stasis. The coin flip is made and, as it descends, we FADE OUT, not knowing the results.

Tsiteerin::
In the full post, Mallozzi also discusses possible solutions to the conclusion that they ended up writing and filming. Though the writers hadn’t settled on how to resolve the fate of Eli and the rest of the crew, or how much time would have passed when they woke up, they brainstormed a lot of different scenarios, including:

Eli fixes a pod
Eli taps some hitherto unexploited power reserve which allows him to extend life support for three years
Eli manages to survive the three-year trip by routing sufficient power to keep life support active in the shuttle
Eli fails to fix the pods or extend life support, so he survives by sitting in the chair and uploading his consciousness to Destiny‘s computer
Rescue comes in the form of some outside force, such as a new portable power supply from Earth (which has figured out how to dial Destiny in the intervening three years) or an advanced military contingent of the crew’s descendants (from “Common Descent” and “Epilogue”)

Tervet artiklit loe eespool viidatud lingilt. Smile Minule isiklikult tundub, et "tegelik" lõpp oli parem, sest sellest jäi siiski vähemalt mõningane lõpetatuse tunne. Siin pakutud otsene cliffhanger oleks olnud väga häiriv ning lahendused on ka kuidagi sellised deus ex machina stiilis.

Samuti võib ehk huvi pakkuda Syfy ametlik vastus varasemale GateWorldi arvamusartiklile Syfy-poolsetest vigadest SGU näitamisel. Peaks ütlema, et mina olin sellest avalikust kirjast meeldivalt üllatunud, sest seda ei juhtu just eriti sageli, et telekanalid võtavad vaevaks katkestatud sarjade fännidele selgitada otsuse tagamaid. Põhiliselt keskenduti vaatajanumbrite languse ja sellest tingitud eetriaegade muutmise selgitamisele, aga muuhulgas anti vastus ka tüüpilistele etteheidetele, mida Syfyle Tähevärava osas tehtud on:
Tsiteerin::
The erratic scheduling killed SGU:
We started the show on Fridays where we’ve had the most success and where it initially did well, and we left it there until it started struggling. When it was clear the show had fallen to unsustainable levels and would not survive on Fridays, only then did we move it to the night where our highest rated show of all time had recently aired.

The hiatus killed SGU:
As you can see from the ratings above, the biggest drop in viewers came before the hiatus, not after. In fact, SGU actually grew around 10% after the hiatus between season 1.0 and 1.5 in its first two episodes back.

If you’d left it on Friday nights, it would have done well:
When left on Friday nights SGU lost 1/3 of its audience and dropped to consistently unsustainable ratings levels. The only hope of keeping it was to move it to another night where new viewers could find it.

You canceled SGU because you hate science fiction:
If we didn’t like science fiction we simply wouldn’t have made SGU. It’s because we like science fiction that we tried it. Even though SGU was ultimately unsuccessful, we don’t regret trying it. Science fiction shows are the backbone and lifeblood of our network, and we have many in development. Later this year we’ll be debuting Alphas, the Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome pilot is being worked on as you read this, the movie Red Faction starring Stargate Universe‘s Brian Jacob Smith will air next month, 5 of our original dramas will return with new seasons or new episodes this year, and we’re working on many more behind the scenes.

You never supported SGU:
There is literally no one other than MGM who supported it more than we did. We were the only network who gave the show a try and the only ones who committed to making and airing 40 episodes before a script had been written. We invested tens of millions of dollars and thousands of hours of work over many years making and supporting the show.

You canceled SGU in order to make wrestling:
We would have happily kept making SGU regardless of anything else on our schedule if the ratings were sustainable. We don’t discontinue successful shows to make room for other shows … no network does because no network has a full roster of successful series. SGU was judged solely on its own ratings.

You don’t like Stargate:
We love Stargate. Combined we’ve made 12 seasons of 3 separate series and helped support two SG-1 films. It’s been an amazing ride and we’re incredibly proud of the cast and crew of all the shows, and thankful to all the viewers who watched.

Paistab, et SGU lõpetamise tõttu on suuremat sorti avalik kirjavahetus käima lükatud. SGU produtsent Joseph Mallozzi vastas omakorda Syfy selgitustele, kus ta nõustus peamise punktina selles, et "televisioon on äri", kuid jäi eriarvamusele võrdluse osas SGA-ga:

Tsiteerin::
“Comparing the SGA premiere to the SGU premiere is grossly unfair,” Mallozzi said. “First — Atlantis premiered during the summer while Universe — originally slated for a [summer] premiere — premiered in the much more competitive fall. Second, the time between the two premieres has seen a significant increase in DVR usage and Internet downloads, and a simultaneous erosion in live viewership. Coincidence? Maybe, but I don’t think so.”

Samuti pani produtsent vaatajate vähesuse muutunud eetriaegade ja vaatamisharjumuste arvele:
Tsiteerin::
In this case, then, the issue was not so much with Stargate‘s ability to find an audience as with the difference between the summer and fall seasons (Syfy’s highest rated dramas air in the summertime) — and a change in television viewing habits and options since 2004.

“Simply put,” Mallozzi said, “back when Atlantis aired, fewer viewers were recording or downloading television and many more were watching television live.”
